Between the late eighteenth century and the 1930s South Yorkshire’s rural landscape and communities were transformed by coal mining and the movement of coal, with the population growing at a phenomenal rate. Drawing on a wide variety of sources, Mel’s copiously illustrated talk explores the history of the physical and social development of these very varied mining communities.
