Summer Reading Challenge 2019

The summer reading challenge: “Space Chase”

Have you completed your summer reading challenge? The challenge ends on 21 September so there’s still time! Remember, all you have to do is read 6 books. They can be any books, but they must be borrowed from the library. There are rewards for each book finished and a certificate if you complete the whole challenge.

The Turner Museum of Glass

19 July at 7.30pm: The Turner Museum of glass, with Professor John Parker

Learn about W.E.S. Turner – his personality, expertise and interests. Learn about the history of glass-making, the role played by South Yorkshire and what made Turner specialise in glass in a city built on steel. See how the past was influenced by the availability of raw materials and energy, uncover the role of technological breakthroughs but also learn how glass manufacture has been moulded by societal changes and 2 world wars. Finally, we’ll examine the glass collection in the Museum itself.

An evening with Alan Biggs

16 August at 7.30pm: “When your hobby is your job”, with Alan Biggs

An evening with football journalist and broadcaster Alan Biggs. Alan has worked on national radio and television since being sports editor at Radio Hallam in Sheffield. He has also reported in national newspapers, writes a column for the Sheffield Telegraph and is the author of three books.

Tickets £5 available from the library about a month before.

Following feedback from our recent user survey, we’ve been buying books again, and have just added over 30 new titles to our “yellow sticker” stock, aimed at 8-12 year-olds. A few are shown here. Why not pop in to the library and take a look at the full selection?

Abbey Dale Forge

17 May at 7.30pm: The Tenants and Workers of Abbey Dale Forge with Pauline Burnett

How did Abbey Dale Forge become synonymous with high quality edge tools? Rising from a single grinding wheel over 400 years ago, the forge brought both wealth and bankruptcy to its tenants, but also fortune, misfortune and even tragedy to its workers. Hear about the successes and failures of the men who strived to develop this site, and the lives of some of their workers.

Free talk: Taking a stand against scams

Do you worry about falling victim to a scam? What steps can you take to reduce the threat? In this free session from Lizzie Wilson, community banker at NatWest, you’ll learn how to help yourself stay safe against all types fraud, including online, postal, doorstep and on the phone. Lizzie will also keep you up to date with the latest scams to be aware of.

Bohemian Rhapsody

Friday 7 June at 7.30pm: Bohemian Rhapsody

Fresh from winning mulitple awards at the Golden Globes comes the Freddie Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody. Based on the true story of Queen’s journey, the story chronicles Freddie Mercury’s tempestuous journey struggling to find his place as a beloved and world-famous artist. Starring Rami Malek and including all of Queen’s greatest hits, this movie can’t fail to bring the house down.

Tickets on sale at the library now. A suggested donation of £5 gets you refreshments and a raffle ticket.

Feast of Folk

Friday 14 June at 7.30

An evening of traditional and contemporary folk music

Back by popular demand, our line up for this evening includes:

  • Judy Dunlop, a member of the Albion Band in the early 1990s, and still one of  British folk music’s top vocalists. Accompanied by Jon Scaife on guitar.
  • Peter Burnett, providing his own inimitable take on folk singing
  • Pete Garratt, Ken Atkinson and Geoff Heppell providing solo and three-part harmony singing along with stunning accompaniment
  • The Offshoot Band Jon Scaife, Charlie Smallwood and Geof Trend playing ceilidh music on lots of strings — their mandolin pieces a delight to hear. Between them they’ve recorded over a dozen albums and performed in Western Europe, America and Asia
  • Our artists this year weill also be joined by a further outstanding singer, Steve Thomason
 

Tickets go on sale at the library on Friday 17 May, priced at £10 which includes a glass of wine.  You can watch a video of last year’s event on youtube here.
