Darkest Hour

Friday 5 April at 7.30pm: Darkest Hour

It’s the Second World War and Winston Churchill is Prime Minister. He must decide whether to negotiate with Adolf Hitler, or fight on knowing that it could mean a humiliating defeat for Britain and its empire. Starring Gary Oldman (who won the Best Actor Oscar), Lily James and Kristin Scott Thomas. Empire Magazine described the movie as “Gripping, touching, amusing and enlightening.

The Sheffield Free Bird Challenge

26 April at 7.30pm: The Sheffield Free Bird Challenge with Peter Brown

In 2016 well known Sheffield bird watcher Pete Brown set out to see how many bird species he could find in the Sheffield area in one year at no cost to his pocket or the planet! Birding only by bike, boots and bus (senior citizen’s bus pass) Pete set a target of finding 150 different birds and raising £1,500 for Cancer Research UK. His talk looks at highs and lows encountered during the year and shows just how rich in bird life our city and its surroundings can be.

Readathon 2019

Our “Readathon” event on 22 Feb 2019 featured the two “Zog” books by Julia Donaldson, ably read by Janet Black and Mike Walters, plus craft work supervised by Lynne Brown (with a dedicated band of helpers). As you’ll see, the event attracted a large number of youngsters.

Wildflower Walks in the Peak District

15 Feb at 7pm: “Wildflower Walks in the Peak District” with Peter Machan

Few areas of the British Isles support such a varied flora as the Peak District, with some of the country’s most stunning floral displays. Over the years Peter Machan has sought out and recorded the best of these localities throughout the seasons. Learn the reasons for the region’s rich floral diversity, see many of the familiar and rare flowers, and discover where and when you can enjoy the floral highlights for yourselves.

A mixture of story-telling and crafts, this year based on the books of Julia Donaldson.

Zog is the keenest dragon in school. He’s also the most accident-prone. Luckily, a mysterious little girl always comes by and patches up his bumps and bruises. But will she be able to help him with his toughest test: capturing a princess?

No registration necessary for this free event. Come for the morning or the afternoon.

South Pacific

Friday 1 March at 7.30pm: South Pacific

The popular movie from 1958 based on the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical of the same name. On a South Pacific island during World War II, love blooms between a young nurse and a secretive Frenchman who’s being courted for a dangerous military mission.

With fabulous songs including “Some Enchanted Evening”, “Bali Ha’i” and  “Younger than Springtime”, the movie won three Oscars including Best Musical Score and was nominated by the AFI as one of the Greatest Movie Musicals.

Monsters Inc

Saturday 2 March at 2pm: Monsters Inc

In another success from Pixar we follow the adventures of James P. “Sulley” Sullivan and Mike Wazowski, two monsters who, in order to power the city, have to scare children so that they scream. However, the children are toxic to the monsters, and after a child gets through, they realise things may not be what they think. John Goodman, Billy Crystal and Steve Buscemi provide voices.

No need to book — just turn up. Suggested donation £3 adults, £2 children. Ice creams and refreshments available.

In February comes the classic 1970 movie based on the book by E Nesbit. Starring Jenny Agutter, Dinah Sheridan and Bernard Cribbins, the film frequently makes it onto top British film lists. After the enforced absence of their father, three children move with their mother to Yorkshire, where during their adventures they attempt to discover the reason for his disappearance

Edie

Friday 1 February at 7.30pm

In this movie from director Simon Hunter, 83 year old Edie believes that it is never too late. Packing an old camping bag, leaving her life behind and embarking on an adventure she never got to have – climbing the imposing Mount Suilven in Scotland. Sheila Hancock stars in the film and as an aside, she completed the trek up the mountain herself making her the oldest person to do so.
