Ancient Suburbs of Sheffield

7.30pm Friday 26 Feb: A free evening zoom talk "Ancient Suburbs of Sheffield"

  • Did you know that Salmon were to be found in the 17c. river Don in one ancient suburb?
  • … or that one of the country’s largest cricket grounds in the 19th c. was to be found in another ancient suburb of Sheffield (later to be centre of heavy industry.)
  • … or that Fulwood in 1666 (Year of the great plague) contained spa waters where people were sent “to take the waters.”
  • … or that another suburb to the south contained the first reservoirs in Sheffield to provide drinking water instead of the ancient wells.

It would be too unwieldy to look at all of Sheffield’s ancient suburbs but in this talk we concentrate on some of the oldest dating back as far as the Domesday book (1086). A fascinating insight into some household names such as Attercliffe, Darnall, Heeley, Fulwood, Crookes and more.

Join David  as we step back in time to find out the origins of some of Sheffield’s ancient suburbs. Not to be missed.

You can join the meeting using this link. Meeting room opens at 7.15. Talk starts at 7.30

Patrick Coghlan

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Patrick Coghlan, who passed away in April after a long period in intensive care with C-19. Patrick played a lead role in establishing Greenhill as a volunteer-run library and was our chairman for its first four years. More recently, he was the instigator of our project to open our new branch in Lowedges. He was passionate about libraries and reading, and his vision and calm wisdom will be sorely missed. Patrick used to talk about still being able to visit the library with his Zimmer frame when he was 90; sadly that is not now going to happen.

Pictured here are Patrick with Darrell Porter (council volunteer library support), councillor Mary Lea, and library operations manager Ann Hartley.

We’re interested in hearing from anyone who might like to open their garden during our Open Gardens weekend (8 and 9 June). Horticultural magnificence is not a requirement but you should ideally live within a 15 minute walk of the library. If you’re interested send an email to gardens@greenhill-library.org

Thanks to all the volunteers who turned up on 24 March to help plant our new trees and flower beds. Photo below.

The company which used to take our unwanted books is no longer providing this service, which creates a significant disposal problem for us. Consequently, we are having to be more selective in the book donations we can accept. Please do not be offended if the donations you offer are turned away.

24 March: a group of hardy volunteers turned up to help with the planting on the roundabout and the library lawn. Planting professionally designed by Fran Halsall (fourth from left, in purple top and grey skirt). Lots more photos here.

Up and running at Lowedges!

Feb 12th 2020 – Our first day of operation at Lowedges

Meet Akin … one of our newest volunteers, who will be working regularly in the new library. Akin comes to us with experience of working in other libraries around Sheffield, notably Firth Park, where he was “Children’s Champion” for three years.

Our thanks also to Lucy, Ann, Patrick, Wendy, and the others who have worked hard to turn our vision of a library in Lowedges into reality.

One of the first families to visit us. This was taken just before we received a wonderfully chaotic deluge of children and young mums after school finished. Altogether we signed up 13 new members.

This young reader was keen to get stuck straight in.

The library will be open from 2pm – 5pm each Wednesday and 10am – 1pm each Thursday. Come and visit us in the Lowedges Community Centre (near the top entrance to Greenhill Park).
