The popular movie from 1958 based on the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical of the same name. On a South Pacific island during World War II, love blooms between a young nurse and a secretive Frenchman who’s being courted for a dangerous military mission.

With fabulous songs including “Some Enchanted Evening”, “Bali Ha’i” and  “Younger than Springtime”, the movie won three Oscars including Best Musical Score and was nominated by the AFI as one of the Greatest Movie Musicals.

Tickets on sale about a month before. A suggested donation of £5 gets you refreshments and a raffle ticket

Monsters Inc

In another success from Pixar we follow the adventures of James P. “Sulley” Sullivan and Mike Wazowski, two monsters who, in order to power the city, have to scare children so that they scream. However, the children are toxic to the monsters, and after a child gets through, they realise things may not be what they think. John Goodman, Billy Crystal and Steve Buscemi provide voices.

In this movie from director Simon Hunter, 83 year old Edie believes that it is never too late. Packing an old camping bag, leaving her life behind and embarking on an adventure she never got to have – climbing the imposing Mount Suilven in Scotland. Sheila Hancock stars in the film and as an aside, she completed the trek up the mountain herself making her the oldest person to do so.

A Star is Born

In this 2018 version of A Star Is Born from first-time director and star Bradley Cooper, a musician helps a young singer find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral. Lady Gaga also stars as the young singer. The Guardian described A Star Is Born as “outrageously watchable”. The movie has also been nominated for eight BAFTAs.

A visually stunning retelling of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s short story ‘The Nutcracker and the Mouse King’. In the story a young girl is transported into a magical world of gingerbread soldiers and an army of mice. The movie stars Keira Knightley, Matthew MacFadyen, Richard E Grant, Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman. Described by Empire magazine as “whimsical, likeable fairy tale.”

Starring Lily James and Michael Huisman, the movie gained positive reviews with the Metro describing the performances as “classy”.

We’ve been running Code Club sessions for a while now and on 21 November, we’re holding a session for parents who:

  • Already have a child at code club 
  • Have a child who might be interested, and would like to know more

Also, although Code Club is aimed at teaching coding skills to 9-13 year olds, we’re wondering if there’s demand for a club for adults? It’s never too late to start learning! Come along if you’re interested.
